Happy New Year!
Happy New Year!
My husband and I were talking the other day about how awesome the holiday of New Year’s is because at no other holiday or time of year do you get to re-start, do-over, move on, leave it behind. It’s the only time you really feel that closure for your life. Closure to failed goals you had last year, or weight you may have gained instead of lost, things you meant to do but didn’t. You get to start over, fresh, clean and with a renewed sense of purpose.
I don’t really make New Year’s resolutions anymore, but nonetheless I feel the healthy weight of the new year. I feel the sense of having that fresh start and wanting to make it count.
I think the theme of last year was “getting through it”. I believe my husband and I made an unspoken pact with each other that whatever each of us needed to just trudge through and get to the other side well by all means, do it. For me that was tuning things out, watching too much television, not digging deeper in my friendships or really clinging to my faith in the way that does get you through things that are stressful or hard.
We did get through it and pretty well when it was all said and done. We sold our home in Illinois that had become a big burden for us, my husband went from unemployed for 6 months to a job that he is liking more than he ever expected, we moved (stressful) but back “home” for me where I’ve dreamed of being for a long time…. And we are…. feeling….settled. We feel like we have grown up a lot over this past year, and we really look forward to putting some better things in practice for this new year.
I’m 40 years old, I have a supportive husband and two awesome boys, I have a good stable part time job with an awesome schedule, I am starting school this month, I’ve been a vegetarian for a year now, I am training for the Fifth Third River Bank 25K run and I feel better than ever.
I do make goals for the New Year and I am really excited about what 2011 has in store. I want to dig deeper into my faith, spend more quality time with my friends and family and get through the pre-requisites necessary to apply to nursing school by this time next year. I feel I am on the cusp of some amazing things happening in my life and I look forward to seeing it unveil.
What about you? Do you make resolutions or are they simply goals you put before you to strive for throughout the year? What helps you stay motivated to keep after your goals?
Lets get on with 2011!
